5 formal wear myths – busted

[vc_section][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]If you are planning to attend to a formal event, you need to follow certain rules. We know, it’s no fun, but it’s tradition, so you’ll have no choice! Let’s get you up to speed for the occasion by debunking some of the formal wear myths that your dad, or granddad told you is the holy grail of proper attire for the big formal events out there.

Don’t blame them – they (nor we) didn’t know better either. That is, until now. Myths die hard, when they become popular “wisdom”. They need to be exposed, to avoid style-mishaps and poor buying decisions. Let’s call it part of our mission.

The regular readers of this blog may find these tips obvious, but this is perhaps a good list for newcomers to the world of menswear. We hope you’ll find these debunked myths useful for you. [/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

MYTH 1: BLACK IS THE SAFE CHOICE FOR FORMAL EVENTS

[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3484″ img_size=”full”][vc_column_text]Wrong. Wearing black is surely a favorite choice, when it comes to formal dressing, and granted, it also looks the most classy color of them all (the one to rule them all), but it’s by far not the only color, that you can wear at formal events. We want you to think blues, greys and browns – there are many colors that look good during formal events.

Contrary to the general belief, a black suit does NOT go with everything. A widespread myth that needs to be debunked immediately. A black suit is the least versatile color possible. Black suits are most commonly linked to two kind of events – funerals and formal events. Rather choose a blue or a grey suit, to liven up the mood a bit. Black is….boring.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

MYTH 2: MATCHING YOUR TIE TO YOUR POCKET SQUARE IS ELEGANT

[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3491″ img_size=”full”][vc_column_text]Wrong. This is a practice that has spread faster than any disease out there. It just screams “make room – bad taste, bad taste coming through”. Matching your tie to your pocket square is a good example of what NOT to do, if you want to be the topic of the conversations positively, rather than “behind your back” kind of talks.

You’ll want to appear nonchalant with a natural look, and by all means try to avoid the obvious efforts of appearing elegant. Don’t overdo it. You don’t want people to look at you and have them wonder how long you spent in front of the mirror getting ready.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

MYTH 3: A TUX IS A NO-BRAINER – I’LL JUST WEAR THAT

[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3492″ img_size=”full”][vc_column_text]Unless you’re really wealthy, you probably don’t have many occasions to step out in formal wear. It’s understandable that many guys believe that the only appropriate outfit for their wedding day is a tuxedo: When else will you get a chance to look like James Bond, right? But at a formal event? You don’t really need to wear a tuxedo.  Any suit worn right will do. In fact, a suit has much more alternatives, over the formal alternative. Buying a proper suit will definitely be a choice you’ll thank yourself for later, as you’ll be able to wear it more often, for other occasions than only formal events.

We hate to bring it to you, but buying a tux is a bit of waste of your hard earned money, unless you are insanely wealthy and wearing a Tux is expected of you.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

MYTH 4: MATCHING SHOES TO YOUR BUTTONS

[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3494″ img_size=”full”][vc_column_text]When it comes to your shoes, don’t worry about trying to match them with the color of the buttons on your blazer. You should instead be much more concerned about finding the right colored shoes to go with the suit itself, and then complete your look with a belt matching your shoe color.

If you are however very particular about matching your shoes with your suit buttons, then you could look to get the buttons changed (or tell us prior to your next order). This is where bespoke suits come into their own as you have the option to choose the exact buttons you’d like on your suit from the very start.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

MYTH 5: STICK TO WHAT YOU KNOW

[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3495″ img_size=”full”][vc_column_text]False. Stop telling yourself things like: “I couldn’t pull that look off” or “It’s just not my style.”. You don’t know that before you try it. You very much likely can wear that look. The best way to expand yourself – in anything, is to try new things. It’s no difference clothes, just try them on. We do live in an online world but retail stores have change rooms for a reason and if you’ve got a spare thirty minutes, why not go play dress-ups?

After that, head home and get to know your wardrobe in a new way. The biggest debunker of myths, is trying on something (or a combination of things) that – by the rule book – doesn’t work, and then realizing it actually looks good. That’s how trendsetters do it. By keeping an open mind and experimenting with colors, textures and shapes your personal style will come alive.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]If you need advice with your mixing and matching, let us hear about it on our Social media channels, or via our contact form on www.damanino.com.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][/vc_section]
