Pants Rise Explained

When it comes to clothing in general, gentlemen are quite lucky to be able to follow
a rather easy sizing system. Pants is just one example, as on the contrary to the
Ladies, you have far less measurements ahead of you. With pants you get to
choose the inseam length and waist size. That’s about it. Okay, not that easy (we’ll
get to that), but compared to the Ladies, we just don’t have to follow a sizing
system that almost requires you to have a doctors degree (and a rather alternate
logic).

What Gents and Ladies do have in common though, is that they come in all shapes
and sizes. For you to buy an off-the-rack solution therefore doesn’t come easy,
although you might really try your best at your local retail-shop. No matter how
much you hold your breathe – if it doesn’t fit easily, chances are that it won’t fit later
either. A pair of pants are not to be confused with jeans, they won’t expand along
the way (well, just a bit).

One of the most important aspects for great pants fit is that of the pants rise. This
article is here to help you to explain you what rise is, how it is measured and last,
but not least, why it shouldn’t be overlooked.

The pants rise – what is it?

First things first, what is rise? What does it mean? The rise is the distance from the
middle of the crotch seam of your pants all the way to the top of the waistband.
The rise of the pants is important, as it determines where the pants sit on your body
and created your waistline. Choosing the right rise of your pants determines the
dimensions of your body.

Types of pants rise
You can get a regular, low, short or high rise. The regular rise is also called mid- or
normal rise and is usually seen on most pants you find in your size in the retailstores.
The low rise option is worn at your hips, made to sit well, right below your
natural waist-line. Short rise is meant to be worn on your natural waist and is
essential to Gentlemen with short legs. This is quite difficult to find, but of course
not with a good Tailor on hand. The short rise means that it won’t have a bunch of
extra material in the crotch area, which will be felt as more comfortable on shorter
body types. Now, the high rise on the other hand are a good option for taller Gents
that want to wear their pants at their waist, rather than at their hips.

So, what did you learn from this
If you’re finding yourself at a bit on the lower than usual side of heights, don’t opt for
pants with low rise, but choose short or regular rise pants instead.
If you’re short, but a longer torso then high rise pants are the way to go. High rise
pants are usually always a good idea for taller gentlemen, as to compliment on the
overall height of the torso. Unless your legs are much longer than your torso, you
should stick with regular rise pants for business casual and formal wear. Also,
compared to low rise pants, regular to high rise pants contribute to a more
sophisticated, more mature look.
