Men’s Fashion Myths – Debunked!

Don’t Always Believe What You Hear

Myths about men’s style and fashion have been around decades. If you’re a fashion-forward man who puts effort in making that perfect first impression, then it’s time to debunk these misconceptions to avoid potentially poor buying decisions.

So let’s cut straight to it. These are the myths and accepted “facts” of men’s fashion today and it is with our great hope that this list will help you in future style decisions and purchases.

MYTH: Black Is The Best Suit Color Because It Goes With Everything

Oh, wrong. So very wrong. This is certainly a widely accepted reality of men’s bespoke fashion and it’s terribly inaccurate. Black suits do not go with everything. In fact, they are usually linked with two kinds of occasions: funerals and formal events. A black suit is incredibly proper. It’s high time this myth is put to rest. If you are in the market for your first suit, DO NOT get a black one! Instead, choose a versatile navy blue, grey or beige suit.

MYTH: More Is Always Better

With all the advertisements on social media and plastered on the side of the road, it’s easy to think that you need to be constantly shopping. In Bangkok alone it seems our malls are popping up like weeds in a poorly maintained garden. In general, most people own way too much stuff. All you really need is a couple staple items in your wardrobe and you will be done shopping for a long time. Avoid buying into consumerism. Check out these ridiculous “articles” that only promote ongoing consumerism. I mean, really, do you need seven pairs of white jeans in your closet to be happy? We don’t think so.

MYTH: Never Mix Patterns

We aren’t saying you don’t need to be CAREFUL when you’re mixing patterns and designs. It can definitely be tricky and easily spiral out of control. But, if you can master it, an outfit with mixed patterns can really make you stand out! Back in the days, it used to be a strict no-no to mix patterns. In contemporary, modern fashion, mixing patterns can look extremely sophisticated and stylish.

MYTH: Pink Is For The Girls

Pink is the ultimate color for spring and should be embraced! Flaunt your confidence by not giving a hoot about what people think. You can rock a pastel, baby pink color which suggests fashionable European style. Flaunting solid, bright pink can be done well via a statement piece such as a dress shirt or polo. To make pink really work for you, pair it with neutral colors like a navy blue tie or a beige cashmere sweater.

MYTH: Don’t Mix Brown And Black

Nobody cares anymore. Brown and black can look great together in the same outfit. The myth stems from the idea that the two dark colors will clash and look messy without the contrast. Easy fix – when wearing black, opt for light shades of brown so you get that pop of contrast. The ‘Don’t Mix Navy and Black’ myth is the same. Just pay attention to the contrast and shade of the colors to make it work. Forget about all the rules! Fashion is fun.
